The Galleries in the Valencia Cathedral

Location

Galleries or “obra nova”

Introduction

From the façade, continuing to the left, begins the Galleries.

They are made up of three floors or superimposed galleries with arches open to the outside, destined to the contemplation of processions and public events, and semicircular arches supported on the first floor on Doric pilasters; on Ionic pillars and pilasters in the second floor; and on ionic columns in the third floor.

The Galleries

The galleries are a semicircular lookout in Renaissance style attached to the Cathedral and facing the Virgin’s Square.

Its construction began in 1566, under the direction of Miguel Porcar.

The construction

This construction forms a semicircle, the lower part of which is solid and the other two are open.

The galleries

In one of the restorations that was carried out during the second half of the 20th century, the roof was removed, leaving the columns of the third body exposed, and also allowing a better view of the dome of the Cathedral.

The Galleries

From the first covered gallery the Sermon on Palm Sunday or the so-called “Sermon on the Palm” used to be proclaimed.

It is also the place where the canons and guests sit to contemplate the great shows that take place in the Virgin’s Square.

Arch to the Basilica

The arch is an overpass that connects the Cathedral with the Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken.

The structure was built in 1660, following the typical baroque style of this time.

It consists of a considerable semicircular arch over which the covered passage is established, where three rectangular windows are located on each side.
