Exterior Cathedral Tour

1. Gate of the Apostles

The Door of the Apostles in the Virgin's Square

Location

The Gate of the Apostles

Introduction

This door of the Cathedral receives its name from the twelve apostles that constitute its entrance.

The Apostles’ Door is opened to the Virgin’s Square. It has four pointed arches, making a triple archivolt with forty-eight reliefs in the space between the columns representing virgins, angels and the blessed.

The Door of the Apostles

French gothic style

With a French Gothic style, it was built between the 13th – 14th centuries and, although its author is unknown, it is known that in 1354 it would already be completed, and it can be attributed to Nicolás Ancona, master builder of the Cathedral at this time.

Entrance to the Cathedral

This was the former entrance to the mosque.

And at present, the new Valencian prelates make their solemn entrance.

Authors

Having built this portal over the entrance to the mosque, we know little or nothing about the author, since the artists worked for the greater glory of God.

In 1354 it was completely finished and the coats of arms that decorate the entrance also shed light on the dates in question (13th and 14th centuries).

Water Tribunal

Every Thursday at 12 o’clock in the morning, the Water Court meets at this door, to discuss the law of water management in the Valencian fertile region.
