Glorification of the Valencian martyrs Oil on canvas
José Grassa
(2001)
On 11st March 2001, the Pope John Paul II recognised solemnly the martyrdom of the priest José Aparicio Sanz and others 232 martyrs who gave their lives due to their faith in Christ in Valencia during the religious persecution between 1936 and 1939 (Spanish Civil war).
These priests, monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen were “beatified”, considered as blessed ones, as they can intercede on our behalf with the glory which they have beside the Lord.
Their names were chosen among others who shared the same glorious fate in the archdiocese of Valencia in that period.
Representative religious orders
In addition to the diocesan priests and the laypersons of Catholic Action and other pious associations, we can find representatives of the following religious orders: Dominicans, Franciscans, Conventual Franciscans, Capuchins, Jesuits, Salesians, Amigonian Friars, De La Salle Brothers, Carmelite Sisters of Charity, Servite Order, Piarists (or Escolapios), Claretians, Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly and Capuchin Tertiary Sisters of the Holy Family.
