Saint Francis was born in Assisi in 1182. He renounced to his patrimony and to his family, in order to be consecrated freely to God, embracing the “Lady Poverty” and marrying her. He gave wise Rules to his followers, with the name of Friars Minor (Franciscans). He started an Order of nuns and a society of secular penitents (Third Order). He started the tradition of the “Nativity scene” during the Christmas season and influenced the religious and cultural life of the Late Middle Ages. He died in Assisi in 1226, and his feast day is celebrated on 4 th October.
