Saint Raphael the Archangel
with the young Tobias.
Saint Raphael is one of the four Archangels, as well as Michael, Gabriel and Uriel. His name means ““Medicine of God” in Hebrew. The Book of Tobit, or Tobias (Old Testament) narrates the journey of the young Tobias, under Saint Raphael’s guidance, to look for a wife and, furthermore, how Tobias’ father was healed of his blindness, thanks to the Archangel who made him get a fish and use its bile. His feast day is on 29th September, together with Saint Michael and Saint Gabriel’s feast day, in memory of the dedication of a Basilica to Saint Michael in the Via Salaria, an ancient Roman road near Roma, in the 5th century.

Saint Mary Magdalene Oil on table
Anonymous.
(18th century)
It originally covered the vaulted niche.
Mary of Magdala, the Saint “Myrrhbearer” or carrier of perfumes, was the first who saw Jesus resurrected when she went to the sepulchre to embalm his body. According to the tradition, she expiated her previous life of sinner living in solitude and in penance. Her liturgical memory is celebrated on 22th July. The recumbent statue portrays the mystic trance, contemplating the Cross, with the unguent jar, the book (sign of the contemplative life) and the disciplines or lashes (sign of mortification) and the Cross.
