Statue of Our Lady of the Pillar

According to the tradition, the Virgin Marybefore her transit to Heaven – appeared to the Apostle Saint James in the shore of the Ebro river in order to encourage him in his mission when he was very disheartened in Saragossa, due to the lack of answer to his evangelical message. Therefore, our Lady left him a pillar or column as a signal, which is worshipped in the Basilica of its same name. On the day of the feast of the Virgen del Pilar, on October 12, the discovery of America took place, therefore Our Lady of Pilar is the patron saint of Hispanic world.
