Small exterior chapel
Introduction
Passing the arch that connects the Cathedral and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Forsaken we find this small chapel where according to tradition the First Mass was celebrated when Valencia was reconquered by King James (1238).
The chapel, attached on the outside of the apse and closed by a metal door, it is traditionally known as the place where the First Mass took place after the Reconquest of Valencia, as can be seen in the epigraphic inscription located on the entrance plaque.
First mass commemorative chapel
The chapel was built in the mid-nineteenth century, so there is no evidence that this was the exact place where this mass was celebrated.
It was wrongly devoted to Saint James, Although the protagonist of the sacred space is Saint George, patron saint of the «Centenar de la Ploma», institution whose mission was to protect the flag of Valencia on all her outings.
