Exterior Cathedral Tour

6. The Almoina

The Almoina

Location

The Almoina

Introduction

The Almoina Square is placed where there was a huge building in which alms were distributed (“almoina” in Valencian) since 1288. And without separating ourselves from the wall of the Cathedral, one reaches the other door of the church called the Palace or Almoina Door.

The exterior, in this square, is elegant and simple

The Cathedral

The exterior, in this square, is elegant and simple. With windows with their bars and the gargoyles.

Gargoyle Almoina Square

This place was a true dunghill due to the rubble, herbs, and stones that were there, it was destined for a family cemetery, as read in documents from the 14th and 15th century.

Almoina Square

Ceramic tile panel

On the outside of the Cathedral, towards the Almoina Square, there is a panel of ceramic tiles, made by Jaime de Scals Aracil.

Ceramic tile panel

The work, of acceptable dimensions (1.20 m x 1.60 m approximately), represents the commemoration of the Fifth Centenary of the Canonization of Saint Vincent Ferrer.

In this panel, a master is bringing peace to two rival families, the Vilaragut and the Centelles, action that has as its background a medieval image of the city of Valencia.
