11. Puerta de los hierros

Iron Gates

Location

Puerta de los hierros

Introduction

Designed by the German Konrad Rudolf, who was in the entourage of Archduke Charles. Its location next to the great tower, called Miguelete, could turn the work into a meagre object of little architectural value.

But if we look carefully at this door, we will be convinced that it is one of the best ornaments that our city has.

History

This door owes its name to the baroque iron fence that surrounds the entrance atrium.

Its construction began in 1703 at the hands of Konrad Rudolf, a German architect and sculptor.

Despite the stoppage of the works, a few years later, its construction would be resumed in 1713 by his disciples, ending in 1741.

The most modern door

Without a doubt, it is the most modern door of the three that make up the Cathedral, standing out for its great beauty and value, being one of the few examples of the Italian architectural baroque in Spain, since it follows the style of Bernini, contrasting with the architectural movement established at that time in Spain.

A large altarpiece

With its undulating plant and its more than 36 metres high, it conveys the sensation of being in front of a large altarpiece, despite covering a very limited space, since it was conceived to be seen from the narrow Zaragoza street, currently open to the square.
