55. Bell tower

Bell tower

Location

Bell tower

Introduction

Via a spiral staircase of 207 steps you go up to the bell room and the upper platform where the great bell of the hours is dedicated to Saint Michael, from where this bell tower receives its popular name.

The Miguelete Bell

Symbol of the city of Valencia

Although we only find decoration in the last architectural body, its style responds to the Valencian Gothic.

Its construction began in 1381 with Andreu Julià in charge, and finally, after some years of inactivity, it was finished in 1425, calling it ‘’Campanar Nou’’ to differentiate itself from the old Romanesque bell tower, currently non-existent.

Three halls

Originally the tower would be exempt from the Cathedral, but after the prolongation of the naves, it would end up joining it.

Inside there are three rooms, arranged from the second to the fourth body and connected by a spiral staircase.

Shelter room

Located in the second body of the Micalet. It is known as ‘’la presó’’ (the prison), since it is where those fleeing from justice took refuge, seeking the protection of the Church, which gave them asylum.

It is a small octagonal room, gloomy, with large walls and little lighting.

Bell ringers’ Room

Located in the third body of the bell tower. The bell ringer used to live in it, in charge of ringing the bells regularly, which would give the room its name.

The room is characterized by its vault, with a hole that would connect with the third room by ropes that would allow the ringing of bells.

Bells Room

Located in the fourth and last solid body that makes up the tower, it is dedicated to housing 11 bells, out of a total of 13.

The room has a ribbed vault roof as well as eight Gothic-style windows, most of which are occupied by the bells it houses.

Terrace

From its terrace a wonderful perspective is contemplated.

Views from the Micalet

Its name comes from the great bell dedicated to Saint Michael (1532, 11 tons of weight)

It preserves other magnificent old bells that are turned by hand.
