Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church.

Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine was born in Tegaste of Numidia (North Africa) in 354. After a light and ideologically turbulent life, he received the baptism in Milan by the hands of Saint Ambrose, during the Easter Vigil of the year 387. Saint Monica, his mother, prayed frequently for his conversion. After his mother’s death (in Ostia, Italy, 387 A.D), he came back to Africa and embraced the monastic life. He was ordained priest and, finally, Bishop of Hippo Regius. He died in 430 while his episcopal city was being besieged by the Vandals. He wrote a great number of works, among them Confessions, The City of God and Bible commentaries. He is called the “Doctor of Grace”, and his feast day is on 28th August.

Saint Teresa of Jesus José Camarón Bonanat.

Saint Teresa of Jesus

Saint Teresa of Jesus was born in Avila in 1515. When she was eighteen years old, she joined the Order of Carmelites. Afterwards, she reformed the Order from 1562 onwards. She died in Alba of Tormes in 1582. Thanks to her mystic writings, she deserved the title of Doctor of the Church. Her feast day is celebrated on 15th October

Tomb

Tomb of the erudite Valencian Gregorio Mayans Siscar (born in Oliva in 1699) and his relatives.

Gregorio Mayans Gregorio Mayans was one of the most representative men of the Spanish Enlightenment in the 18th century. He was professor in Valencia and director of the Royal Library. He corresponded with the main sage and erudite persons of the period (Letters). He edited the classic authors and stood out in the historical and literary review. He advocated specially for a radical reform of the studies of law, grammar and theology. His brother John was a canon of this Cathedral and both ordered the Camaron’s works, “Saint Augustine” and “Saint Teresa” which dominate this altar.
