8. Saint Peter

Chapel of Saint Peter in the Valencia Cathedral

Location

Chapel of St. Peter

History

Since its building, it was the see of the Church of Saint Peter, nowadays extinguished.

It was decorated until the cornice with frescos by Palomino, framed by medallions of stucco, with scenes related to Saint Peter.

Pendentives

In the pendentives some remains of the representations of the four cardinal virtues are preserved (prudence, justice, courage and temperance), artwork by the priest and artist Vicente Victoria, canon of the Collegiate Church of Xativa.

Canvas

The six large canvas painted by Nicolas Falco at the beginning of the 16th century were part of the doors of the altarpiece of the guild of armourers and represent the main moments of the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary in relation with the mysteries of the Saviour Jesus Christ which are celebrated in the liturgical year: The Annunciation, the Nativity of Jesus and the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Epiphany and the Adoration of the Magi of Orient, the Resurrection of the Lord, the Ascension to Heaven and, finally, Pentecost with the descent of the Holy Spirit over the Apostles gathered around the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Apart from these six canvas, the altarpiece would be made up of six others alluding to San Martín, patron of the confraternity, which today are kept in the Sacristy. It was thus an altarpiece like the one on the main altar, with doors, which inside would house the sculpture of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the work of the sculptor Carles Gonçalbes, which can be seen today in the museum.

Centre

In the centre there is an oil on canvas of Saint Peter (17th century) above an ivory and ebony wood crucifix with silver ornaments from the 18th century.

Lamp
