28. Chapel of the Resurrection

Chapel of the Resurrection in the Valencia Cathedral

Location

Chapel of the Resurrection

Description

The portico is chiseled in alabaster translucent, perhaps following the patterns of Yañez de la Almedina (as in the frame of the wings of the main altarpiece and in the cases of the organ), it is one of the first and best sign of the “Roman style” or Renaissance in Spain (around 1510).

Segmental arches

The following elements deserve special attention: the segmental arches, the pilasters and arches’ composition, engaged to the columns and the entablature – called the travata ritmica in Italian, an architectural element designed by Leon Battista Alberti – and the bas-reliefs(grotesque), with candelieri motifs (vertical vegetal ornaments) and a wide selection of eagles, small roses, plants and latticework.

High relief

The high relief of alabaster representing the Resurrection of the Lord is a documented work by Gregorio de Biguerny. It was placed in this site at the beginning of the 16th century. There are trace elements of the polycromy and the gilding which bedecked it in his original aspect.
