The Holy Thorn Reliquary of Saint Louis Unknown author
14th-15th century

Made of gilt silver, embossed and chiselled with cast iron elements and cutwork. Crystal on the reed and monstrance with two precious stones on the cresting.

The reconditory was built in response to the need to house this reliquary with one of the thorns from the crown of Jesus Christ, preserved in the Saint Chapelle in Paris, given by Saint Louis to the Cathedral of Valencia in March 1256.

Holy Thorn Reliquary of Saint Louis

From this place, where some relics were kept, such as the “Holy Thorn”, sent by Saint Louis of France, the mechanism of the “porta caladissa” or raisable was activated, which isolated the sacristy in times of danger.
