The Metropolitan Chapter

The Chapter of the Valencia Metropolitan Cathedral has a glorious history of chapter members whose priestly spirit of generous devotion and love to the Diocesan Church has had an important influence on the spiritual and scientific education of the diocesan clergy and an invariable and faithful cooperation with its Archbishop in the Diocese management.

The chapter’s origin, in its present formation, dates back to the first days after the conquest of Valencia by King James on September 28, 1238.
Its organization has been perfected over time.

Pope Innocent VIII granted the category of Metropolitan Chapter by elevating the Cathedral to this dignity, on July 9, 1492. The structure, remained until the present day, was acquired under the concordat of 1851, agreed between Spain and the Holy See.

The Canon Chapter of the Valencia Cathedral is a priest college with public legal personality under the authority of the Apostolic See and the Archbishop of the Archdiocese, whose commitment, rights and responsabilities are determined in the Canon Law Code and the current Statutes.

The Cathedral Chapter, for its centuries-old existence, its bound to the Church «Mother and head of all the churches within the Diocese», its legal stability conferring the canon law as well as its traditional prestige, is sign of the historical continuation of faith in the Diocese of Valencia.

The Chapter fulfills its mission in cooperation with the Archbishop, supreme minister of the Valencian Archdiocese.

According to a secular tradition and to the church right, the main purpose of the metropolitan Chapter is to give God, a more solemn worship in the cathedral, thus representing especially the Church in the fulfillment of the precept of prayer. Likewise, fulfill those offices that the law or the archbishop entrusts to them.

The archbishop is responsible for presiding over the most solemn liturgical actions. The Chapter assists him in the celebrations in the Cathedral or in any other place, at his request.

The daily choral worship consists of Lauds, Holy Mass, Intermediate Hour and also Vespers in certain solemnities. The day of the Lord and more liturgical ceremonies are celebrated as deserved, trying to facilitate the active participation of the faithful.

The conventual mass is carried out in a special way by the living and deceased benevolent people of the Cathedral and spiritual and material needs of the diocesan community are also entrusted.

At the Cathedral, the Chapter organizes the ordinary and extraordinary pastoral service that requires the good for the faithful. Facilitating the reception of the sacrament of penance is a habitual service of the Cathedral.

For this purpose, the Chapter tries to have enough confessors for the support of the faithful.

The Chapter encourages the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, through the solemn celebration of the Forty Hours and other Eucharistic devotion acts such as the “Thursdays of the Holy Chalice”.

The Valencia Cathedral Museum is open from Monday to Saturday, from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM, and on Sundays and public holidays from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM or from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, depending on the application of winter or summer hours.

Bell Tower "Miguelete"

From 1 December to 28 February

The bell tower “el Miguelete” is open in autumn-winter (from December 1 to February 28) Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:45 PM, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 6:45 PM.

Pastoral Office

The pastoral office opens on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Fridays from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM.

From 1 January to 31 December

The archive is open in the mornings on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM, and on Wednesdays also in the afternoon from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and is open from September 15 to July 15.
