The Chapel of the Holy Chalice

The Holy Chalice of the Lord's Supper

The old Chapter House

The old Chapter House was built under the order of Bishop Vidal de Blanes between 1365 and 1369. It was place for celebration of the Courts of the Kingdom and Theology classes by Saint Vincent Ferrer, among others.

In 1916 the Holy Chalice was moved to the chapter house, its current chapel.

Style and description

The chapel is in a flowery Gothic style (14th century); It has a square plan and plain walls of carved stone.

The chapel measures 13 metres wide and 16 metres high, and is covered with a star-like ribbed vault which arches extend until they rest on polychrome corbels.

In the vault

The twelve apostles are in the peripheral keystones of the vault, and in the central keystone, the coronation of the Virgin Mary in heaven after the Assumption, main mistery of this Cathedral.

This space was not affected by the neoclassical reform of the 18th century. and in it was placed the alabaster altarpiece, the old entrance to the choir (15th century).

The front door and the passageway

When the naves were extended in the 15th century to reach the bell tower and the chapter room, the architect Pere Compte, also author of the Lonja de Valencia, built the passageway to the old chapter house in 1496.
