En el 304, durant la persecuci\u00f3 de Diocleci\u00e0, van ser condu\u00efts a Valentia el Bisbe de Caesaraugusta (Zaragoza) Valer<\/strong> i el seu diaca Vicent<\/strong>, que va patir en aquesta ciutat un martiri tan admirable que va ser conegut i celebrat en tota la cristiandat.<\/p>\n

Els himnes d’Aureli Prudenci,<\/strong> les homilies de Sant Agust\u00ed<\/strong> i els relats de la passi\u00f3 de Sant Vicent van fer d’aquest el m\u00e0rtir m\u00e9s popular de l’Esgl\u00e9sia llatina, fins al punt que amb el seu nom es van fundar moltes poblacions i es van erigir monestirs i catedrals com les de C\u00f3rdoba, Sevilla i B\u00e8rgam.<\/p>\n

Durant l’\u00e8poca romana i visigoda, a la regi\u00f3 valenciana van florir les Esgl\u00e9sies locals de Diana<\/strong> (D\u00e9nia), Ilice<\/strong> (Elx), Saetabis<\/strong> (X\u00e0tiva), Elo<\/strong> (Lorca o Hell\u00edn) i Valentia<\/strong> (Val\u00e8ncia), i coneixem els noms de molts dels seus Bisbes per les seues signatures en els concilis dels segles IV-VIII.<\/p>\n

Aquesta cultura i vida cristiana va romandre patint i feta callar sota l’Islam, tenint m\u00e0rtirs com Sant Bernat<\/strong> i les seues germanes Maria i Gr\u00e0cia<\/strong> (1189) o els franciscans beats Joan de Perusa<\/strong> i Pere de Saxoferrato<\/strong> (1228). Per\u00f2 no es va interrompre el culte cristi\u00e0 en la bas\u00edlica sepulcral de Sant Vicent M\u00e0rtir<\/strong> (la Roqueta), extramurs de la ciutat, donant com a fruit espiritual aquesta Esgl\u00e9sia moss\u00e0rab a Sant Pere Pasqual,<\/strong> despr\u00e9s Bisbe de Ja\u00e9n i m\u00e0rtir a Granada l’any 1300.<\/p>\n

Una nova \u00e8poca es va obrir amb la fundaci\u00f3 del Regne de Val\u00e8ncia per Jaume I d’Arag\u00f3<\/strong> en 1238, sent el primer Bisbe Ferrer de Pallar\u00e9s.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Van arribar llavors pobladors de les regions del nord de la Corona d’Arag\u00f3, ordes mon\u00e0stics, militars i religiosos, i es va establir una nova organitzaci\u00f3 de les di\u00f2cesis, quedant el nord del Regne en la de Tortosa, reinstaurant-se les de Segorbe i Val\u00e8ncia, i creant-se m\u00e9s tard la d’Orihuela, ja en el segle XVI (1564).<\/p>\n
